- Educational
outreach is an important part of On Ensemble's
mission. Lecture demonstrations are geared toward educating our greater
community about the taiko (Japanese drum) and its history both in Japan
and here in the United States. Through these activities we hope to build
cultural awareness and understanding as well as share our art with diverse
communities.

- Lecture Demonstration
- 50 minute program featuring the ensemble's
unique performance as well as explanations of the instruments and
the historical and cultural context of the art form. Suitable for
all ages.
- Assembly Program
- 50 minute assembly program featuring the power
and rhythm of the taiko. In this assembly program students will learn
about the history of taiko, how we learn to play taiko, how taiko came
to America, have a chance to experience a taiko performance first hand
and even get a chance to play the taiko! Suitable for students K-12.
- Lecture/Discussion on the History and Cultural
Context of North American Taiko
- 60 minute lecture/discussion on the history
of taiko in North America and its relationship to Asian American and
Japanese American history and identity.
- Hands-on Workshop
- Hands-on workshop designed to complement lecture
demonstrations and other residency activities. Students learn the oral
system of teaching taiko and a simple taiko song.
- Master Class
- Involved, in-depth session on taiko technique
for taiko groups or those with percussion or taiko experience.
